Research

I’m Biologist and Wildlife Photographer. I'm interested in the study of endangered species, biodiversity, conservation, phylogeny and systematics, a broad field that includes the discovery, description, and classification of life and the inference of evolutionary relationships.  Currently my research involves conservation, ecology, evolution and biogeography of freshwater fish, particularly those distributed in South American basins. I love to use nature photography as tool to preserve species.

My photography is an extension of my scientific interests and I’m trying to be a conservationist photographer able to work on problematic issues and encourage people to answer and ask questions on the subject, specially about themselves and how they understand the world around them.

Professional info

I am a biologist and conservation photographer with practical and theoretical experience ranging from fieldwork in the tropics to molecular-based laboratory and analytical techniques. My work experience in research has been focused in origins and evolution of tropical America’s outstanding biodiversity, particularly oriented to speciation processes, species delimitation, and conservation of Neotropical vertebrates from Northern of South America. I study these aspects using molecular systematics, geometric morphometrics and other tools. These tools allow us to understand broader themes such as historical biogeography, molecular evolution, conservation and the evolution of species.

Actually my focus is oriented to study Species Delimitation of Neotropical Characins and Molecular Phylogeny of the Controversial Genus Bryconamericus and related Genera. I use molecular and morphological tools to help discover relationships among species and resolve taxonomy in order to better understand the evolutionary history of these taxa.   I am more interested in compelling research questions than particular organism groups – animals, plants or fungi.
